This magical award winning Aboriginal tour with Aboriginal Elder – Wilfred (Willie) Gordon, is widely regarded as one of Australia’s ultimate 'must do' experiences!
Guests are asked to make their way to Cairns General Aviation Airport, on Tom McDonald Drive to check-in prior to boarding a magical 45minute flight with Hinterland Aviation to Cooktown. Along the route you will enjoy the spectacular vistas as you fly along the magnificent coastline between World Heritage rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.
Arriving into Cooktown at approximately 8.00am, you will be met by Willie Gordon, aNugal-warra 'Elder', and driven to the outskirts of Hope Vale for the half day Rainbow Serpent Rock Art Tour.
Willie, the traditional story-teller of the Nugal-warra clan, takes you to the Nugal Rock Art Sites, set in stunning countryside high in the hills above Hope Vale. You’ll visit six sites, including the Reconciliation Cave and an ancestral Birthing Site. Willie will share the stories behind the art, stories that can only be told by Elders of the Nugal clan and explains how the paintings speak of the essence of life and the lores of his people.
With his broad smile and infectious laugh, Willie gives you astounding insight into Aboriginal society and spirituality and incites you to think about your own relationship with the land and how the lores of his people can apply to us all! The tour includes an estimated 30-minute bush walk on generally easy terrain. Water is provided and cameras are welcome.
Return to Cooktown at approximately 1.15pm, and enjoy lunch overlooking the Endeavour River with the remainder of the afternoon free to explore historic Cooktown.
Visit the World Class James Cook Museum, stroll the self guided heritage walk along the main street and shores of the Endeavour River. In the late afternoon, you will be transferred to Cooktown Airport for the return flight to Cairns giving you time to reflect on your magical day and time with Nugal-warra Elder Willie Gordon.
