Cairns Dive Centre is one of the largest certifying agencies in the world. They have been operating out of Cairns for many years, maintaining outstanding customer service. Cairns Dive Centre offers Diver Training courses for all experience levels from open water courses to more advanced training.
Learn to dive courses commence daily at their diver training facility, which includes an air-conditioned classrooms and a heated, 4 metre deep training pool (gas heated). There are study materials and exams available in various foreign languages.
The first 2 days of your course are spent learning the theory behind diving and learning new skills in the safety and comfort of the Pool and Classroom facility.
This is followed by a 2 Day / 1 Night live-aboard excursion to the Outer Barrier Reef where you will do your 4 Training Dives and 1 Pleasure Dive whilst onboard Kangaroo Explorer.
Kangaroo Explorer is permanently moored on the Outer Barrier Reef and is accessed via the fast transfer vessel, MV Reef-Kist, transferring passengers to and from the Port of Cairns out to the Kangaroo Explorer on the Great Barrier Reef on a daily basis.
The MV Kangaroo Explorer is a comfortable 25 meter catamaran specifically designed for Queensland coastal cruising. The main deck features a saloon, servery for the galley and a well stocked, licensed bar.All meals are prepared fresh on-board by the vessel's resident chef.
The vessel’s well equipped and spacious dive deck provides easy access to and from the water. If you feel like some quiet time, the vessel’s comfortable sun lounge features a library.
The vessel has 16 comfortable cabins on-board made up of Twin, Double, Triple and Quad berths. Double & Twin cabins are available at no extra charge and are available on a simply ‘first in, first served’ basis (always a good idea to book ahead). All cabins are fully air-conditioned and feature ensuite bathrooms and portholes for your comfort and convenience.
All meals and linen are included whilst on the boat but guests are asked to supply their own towels.
4 Day Learn to Dive Course Itinerary
The Cairns Dive Centre bus will pick you up from your Cairns city accommodation at around 9.00am. You will spend the day learning theory & various skills in the pool. Your day should finish around 5pm when you will be dropped back to your Cairns city accommodation.
Day 2 - Pool & Classroom Training
The Cairns Dive Centre bus will pick you up from your Cairns city accommodation at around 7.45am. Again, you will spend the day finishing the theory & various skills in the pool. Please note that on days 1 & 2 meals, accommodation and passport photos are not included in the course pricing
Day 3 - Diving on the Great Barrier Reef
The Cairns Dive Centre bus and crew will collect you from your Cairns City accommodation at around 8.30am. You will be transferred to the Outer Barrier Reef on Reef-Kist to board the liveaboard vessel, Kangaroo Explorer. After lunch you will do your first 2 training dives. Afternoon at leisure aboard the vessel. Lunch, Dinner and all onboard Accommodation included.
Day 4 - More Diving & Return to Cairns
After breakfast, complete two further training dives with your instructor, followed by your PADI Open Water Diver certification! In the afternoon, after lunch there is the opportunity for a pleasure dive as a Certified Diver before being transferred back into Cairns on Reef-Kist at the end of the day. Breakfast and Lunch are included.

Important Booking Notes: On making a reservation please use Comments Box in Booking Form to indicate your preferred Cabin Type e.g. Double Cabin, Twin Cabin, Triple Cabin or Quad Cabin as well as any other important information e.g. Dietary Requirments etc. you can think to offer to ensure that you are well catered for whilst onboard
Course Extras
- 2 x passport photos for your PADI certification card AU$7.00 (or supply your own)
- Underwater cameras are available onboard for hire
- Dive medical to Australian Standard AS4005-1. AU$60.00 per person (inc GST) only if required
A small soft sided overnight bag, 2 towels, toiletries, change of clothes and something warm for the evening. Bring any dive equipment you have of your own or you can be supplied with any equipment that you need onboard. Please do not bring sleeping bags or large backpacks
Course Requirements
- The ability to swim 200 metres
- The minimum age is 12 years (subject to a medical assessment). Children under the age of 15 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
- An Australian Standard AS4005-1 may be required if Course Instructors deem you to be in a 'risk category. Australian medical standards are different to those overseas. A medical obtained overseas will not be accepted in Australia. Some medical conditions may preclude you from diving. Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, high or low blood pressure and pregnancy are the most common ones encountered. Your dive instructor will advise you on your first day whether a Dive Medical is required. A Dive Medical will cost AU$60.00 should you require one.
Please note there are regulations about flying or going to altitude after diving.
- Currently the rules state that for a single no decompression dive, you should not fly/go to altitude for at least 12 hours.
- For multiple dives you should not fly/go to altitude for at least 18 hours
- We recommend waiting a minimum 24 hours whenever possible. These are guidelines only; there is no guarantee that these recommendations will prevent decompression sickness. Currently there are no guidelines regarding diving after flying.
- Altitude is 300m/1000ft above sea level.
- This includes elevated areas such as the Atherton Tablelands, so be careful when you are booking tours to follow your dive course/trip.
General Notes
- Pick up and drop off from Cairns City based accommodation is included. Transfers from Cairns Northern Beaches are not available and guests are required to make their own way from Cairns Northern Beaches to Cairns Dive Centre’s offices on Abbott Street in Cairns for check-in.
- Please note: the above itinerary is a guide only, and the order of diving and sites visited may change. The captain will always adapt the itinerary to suit weather and tidal conditions.
- Cairns Dive Centre Recommends you carry travel insurance as they do not refund or change trips within 48 hours of travel date.
Please Note
- Kangaroo Explorer will be out of the water for maintenance from 30th January 2018 until 31st of March 2018 and this dive course will be unavailable during this time.
