The Tour
Your day starts with a flight from Cairns to Cooktown! Cairns passengers are asked to make their own way to General Aviation to Hinterland Aviation (at 7 Tom McDonald Drive) to check-in, or, Cairns Northern Beaches and Port Douglas passengers are transferred from accommodation to the General Aviation airport to Hinterland Aviation to check-in.
After introductions and check-in, enjoy a scenic flight over the same waters that Captain Cook sailed through in 1770, marvelling at the views out over the Coral sea as you catch glimpses of the Great Barrier Reef, rugged coastline and World Heritage Listed Rainforest and Mountains!
Arrive into Cooktown where your driver/guide will meet you at the Cooktown’s airport before heading on to your first stop of the morning, Grassy Hill. It was from here that Captain Cook surveyed his route through the Great Barrier Reef! After enjoying the stunning panoramic views, make your way into the quaint township of Cooktown for a guided walk of the esplanade and its many points of interest, before enjoying some free time to explore the township.
The Heritage listed Cooktown Cemetery is next, followed by a visit to the James Cook Museum for a guided tour, here you will see an original anchor and cannon from Cook’s HMB Endeavour (amongst many other interesting exhibits).
Established in 1878, the Cooktown Botanic Gardens are one of Queensland’s oldest, regional botanic gardens. A guided walk shows many of the same plants collected by botanists on Cook's original expedition by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, as well as plants traditionally used by the local Aboriginal people.
Travelling back to Cairns at the end of the day via the Mulligan Highway, you will stop briefly at Black Mountain, Byerstown Range Lookout and the Palmer River Roadhouse. The outback landscape is dotted with termite mounds and many different eucalypt species.
Return to Cairns at the end of the day, arriving back at accommodation at approximately 6.00pm (Port Douglas), 6.45pm (Cairns Northern Beaches) or 7.15pm (Cairns City).
