Take the time out to visit a less travelled route and visit the elevated Atherton Tablelands and soak up the local ambience and natural environment of this stunning region in a custom built, safari style 4WD Vehicle, sampling local gourmet produce, meeting a few local characters along the way.
Rainforestation Nature Park in Kuranda Food Tasting
Fifty minutes after you leave Port Douglas your first stop of the day will be at Rainforestation Nature Park set in the Kuranda rainforest. Rainforestation is a local, family owned business that gives participants an exclusive opportunity for breakfast set on the balcony of the property's 'Tree House Restaurant' to sample a delicious breakfast of Tropical Fruits (seasonal selection) served with Mungali Biodynamic Yoghurt and Wattle Seed Damper, along with a selection of tropical jams and locally grown tea and coffee selection.
De Brueys Winery
Head further up along the Kuranda Range to De Bruey's Boutique Tropical Wines, located near Mareeba on a 15 hectare mango orchard cradled between the peaks of the Great Dividing Range. All wines are made on site using a blend of tradition and innovation which produces high quality wines from a rich diversity of tropical fruits. Here you will be able to sip deliciously different tropical fruit wines, liqueurs, cream liqueurs and ports at the cellar door.
Much attention has been paid to preserving the natural open woodland surroundings on the property with their population of kangaroos, wallabies, possums, native quolls and bandicoots, not to mention the an extensive and colourful array of birdlife including rosella parrots, rainbow lorikeets, black and white cockatoos and birds of prey including wedge tail eagles and kestrels! There are even crocodiles in the local creek at the rear of the property!
‘The Humpy'
After enjoying time at De Brueys, you will head through a patchwork of green farmland with plump grazing cattle and rows of different crops, to stop at ‘The Humpy’. Here you can do some souvenir shopping and sample more delicious locally produced foods, harvested from around the local area. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, dried fruits, jams, sauces, organic and gluten free foods, all await you at ‘The Humpy’. Take the chance to stock up on delicious goodies to enjoy for the rest of your stay in Cairns.
The Australian Platypus Park The Australian Platypus Park is home to a thriving platypus population. These unique creatures can be found in a spring fed pond surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. In order to create a natural environment for the development of the platypus, plants are naturally grown in accordance with the habitat of the platypus.
Take a wander down to see them in this magnificent setting then sit down to enjoy flavoured handcrafted smoked products, combined with a unique blend of local Australian native herbs and spices.
These tasty treats are all produced in-house using only the freshest quality ingredients and include Crocodile, Red Claw Yabby and Kangaroo with fresh local salads topped off with a ‘Tarzali Lakes’ Boutique Beer, Dragon Fruit Cider and Lemon Myrtle Tea (the menu is EXCLUSIVE to your tour.) There is time to purchase some of the smoked products and sauces, all in-house smoked meats are locally sourced from around the tablelands.
Gallo Dairyland
We now head towards the historic village of Atherton. Driving through this thriving township a patchwork of amazing farmland and rolling green hills will appear before you! Your will visit a fully operational dairy farm spread across 1000 acres of rich red volcanic soil that produces delicious handcrafted chocolates and gourmet cheeses in their cheese factory. Sample their delicious selection of locally made cheeses and mounthwatering swiss style hand made chocolates whilst overlooking some fabulous mountainous landscapes.
Mount Uncle Distillery
Travel further on to Mount Uncle Distillery, North Queensland’s first and only operating distillery. This distillery was awarded the title of Australian Distiller of the Year in 2017. The distillery takes its name from the mountain it sits on, named after the uncle of the founding pioneer John Atherton. The distillery is surrounded by coffee and banana plantations with beautiful gardens offering guests the perfect setting to enjoy tasting the planation's award winning liquors and spirits. After lunch and tastings, there is the opportunity to meet some of the 'locals', as the property has some friendly rescue animals including Llamas, Donkeys and Goats that are housed on their property. Time permitting, you may even get the chance to feed them!
Platypus Hut - Queensland Wines & Beers
Next, it's time to head across the Savannah and 'Outback', past giant termite mounds and rich red volcanic soil to a unique 160 acre Private Property. This is where you can soak up the stunning rainforest and pristine environment which is a sanctuary for a multitude of wildlife species. Keep an eye out for passing Kangaroos and head down to 'The Platypus Hut' where you can sit in a tranquil setting as the sun goes down and watch for dive bombing jewelled coloured Kingfishers and the elusive Platypus. There's even the opportunity to dip your toes into a beautiful mountain stream whilst tasting some locally produced Queensland Wines & Beer and homemade Tableland dips.
