The Tour

Take the time out to visit a less travelled route and visit the elevated Atherton Tablelands and soak up the local ambience and natural environment of this stunning region in a custom built, safari style 4WD Vehicle, sampling local gourmet produce, meeting a few local characters along the way.

Your day starts with a pick up from Cairns or Cairns Northern Beaches accommodation and after introductions all around, your vehicle will make its way up the Kennedy Highway, to climb to 500 metres above sea-level, traversing through lush, tropical rainforest and out through dry sclerophyll forest with eucalypts and woodlands, to the first stop of the day; the multi-cultural village of Mareeba and award winning Coffee Works for an introduction to Australia’s largest coffee growing region. Stop at Coffee Works for coffee and chocolate tasting as well as a little bit of time to explore the plantation's treasure trove of gourmet gifts.

Travel onward, through banana plantations, mango plantations and verdant fields of sugar cane through the townships of Tolga and Atherton enroute to Herberton and its Historic Village (voted on Trip Advisor as one of the top 10 historic museums in Australia).  Step back in time at this recreation of the original Herberton village from the 1800’s. Showcasing Australia’s rich and diverse history this outdoor pioneer museum is testament to an era that is long gone. The historic village currently has over 50 original buildings that date from Herberton’s foundation years. Walking through the village, visitors are given a sense of being in a real township complete with chemist, school, bank, grocer’s store, frock salon, toy shop, a working blacksmith, jail and more!

After enjoying the historic village atmosphere, it's time to stop for Morning Tea, freshly prepared on the 'Billy' with Gallo Dairy cheeses and a Tropical Fruit platter, prepared by your driver!

From Herberton it's time to visit Milla Milla Falls, officially known as the most Photographed Falls in Australia! The falls are a popular swimming spot and there's time for a refreshing swim as well as look for local wildlife, including the Ulysses Butterfly and Platypus. The falls are 18.3 metres high (60ft) and were listed on the Queensland Heritage List in 2005. The term Millaa Millaa’ is a MaMu Aboriginal phrase referring to the rainforest vine Elaeagnus Triflora whose fruit appears from May to February.

Travel on to your lunch stop at the Australian Platypus Centre, enjoying the scenic drive with epic views of the Tablelands and the Great Dividing Range as you go! Meet one of Australia’s most curious and unique creatures, the Platypus! The platypus is one of evolution's earliest offshoots of the mammalian family tree and is one of only three egg-laying mammals (called monotremes) in the world.
Here you may catch your first glimpse of this amazing native animal. Take a break for lunch, try a Smokehouse platter, featuring a selection of handcrafted in house smoked meats including Crocodile and Barramundi. These wild flavours are combined with a unique blend of local Australian native herbs and spices. Then enjoy a main course selection made fresh on site at the Centre's restaurant. Here you may also sample locally crafted beer and wines from the region. Special dietary needs can be catered for on request.

After enjoying a satisfying lunch and feeling replenished, hop back into your vehicle and travel into the Rainforest to view one of Australia’s oldest trees, the Curtain Fig Tree; standing at 500 years old. The Curtain Fig Tree is an imposing and distinctive tree set within rare mabi rainforest, valued for its immense size and the curtain effect that has resulted from the thick and interwoven vertical root system. Your guide will provide interesting commentary about the tree as you can inspect this natural wonder, as you walk around the surrounding boardwalk! North Queensland’s rare and fascinating Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo are regularly seen in the trees that surround the Curtain Fig Tree, you may well be lucky to spot one of these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.

All too soon it's time to make your way back home down the range to Cairns. Along the way you will stop at the Humpy Shop for a quick break and the opportunity to purchase locally grown produce including tropical fruits, vegetables, conserves, wines and a treasure trove of other gifts and souvenirs for purchase! Arrive back into Cairns and Cairns Beaches at approximately 5.30pm / 6.00pm.
