The Tour
Day 1 Fly west from Cairns to the Gulf town of Normanton. On arrival,
board the legendary Gulflander train and ride through the savannah landscape
to lunch in the bush. After lunch, soak up Normanton's history before travelling
on to Karumba. An opportunity for a scenic flight (optional) over the Gulf Coast
before enjoying a Gulf of Carpentaria sunset. We overnight in Karumba.
Day 2 South now through real roadtrain country to Burke & Wills Roadhouse
for lunch. On through the vastness of the Gulf Savannah landscape via Gregory
to Adel's Grove, gateway to Lawn Hill National Park. We spend the night here
in permanent tent accommodation.
Day 3 Today, the fabulous oasis of Lawn Hill Gorge, set amid the semi
arid spinifex clad Constance Range. Towering red cliffs and silent waterlily
dotted waterways, the gorge is a haven for an abundance of wildlife and a birdwatchers
paradise. A swim beneath the cooling waterfalls or a canoe paddle (optional)
is highly recommended. Travel onto the remote community of Burketown where we
stay tonight.
Day 4 This morning we head east across the vast Plains of Promise, visiting
Burke & Wills camp # 119, the most northerly camp site of the ill-fated
1860 expedition, and Leichhardt Falls. Lunch in Normanton before continuing
east, visiting Black Bull railway siding and the historic goldmining town of
Croydon along the way. On to Georgetown our overnight stop.
Day 5 This morning we visit Cobbold Gorge to cruise on the beautiful
secluded waterways surrounded by spectacularly carved, 135 million years old,
Hempstead sandstone. In the afternoon we travel onto the famous Lava Tubes of
Undara, the world's largest lava tube system. An after dinner campfire before
retiring to your antique railway carriage accommodation.
Day 6 Breakfast in the Australian bush before taking a tour of the fascinating
190,000 year old geological spectacle with a Savannah Guide. On to Millstream
Falls before lunching in Ravenshoe. A visit to Mt Hypipamee (The Crater) National
Park and the Atherton Tableland's unique Curtain Fig Tree before descending
to the lush green coastal plain and Cairns to end your safari through the remarkable
Gulf Savannah.
