The Tour
Day 1 First the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics Rainforest at Daintree
and the rugged 4WD Bloomfield Track (weather permitting). After lunch the visit
to the quaint Lion's Den Hotel and eerie Black Mountain on the way to historic
Cooktown. Walk where Captain Cook walked, visit the James Cook Museum (optional)
and enjoy the spectacular views, atop Grassy Hill. Overnight to Cooktown's River
of Gold hotel.
Day 2 Climb a sandstone escarpment at Split Rock (reasonable fitness
and suitable footwear required) to view Aboriginal "Quinkan" rock
art before lunch at Laura's Quinkan Hotel. A refreshment stop at Musgrave, the
century old Telegraph Station, then over the Great Dividing Range to the old
gold mining town of Coen and its Homestead Guesthouse.
Day 3 Today we travel to the west coast of Cape York Peninsula to visit
Weipa. Here we will tour it's fascinating mine where bauxite is recovered from
the world's largest known deposit of this ore. Overnight and Heritage Resort
or the Albatross Hotel.
Day 4 An early start today to enjoy 4WD adventure through Cape York's
unique wilderness of gigantic termite mounds, crystal clear creeks, carnivorous
pitcher plants and prehistoric cycads. Lunch at picturesque Fruit Bat Falls,
a great chance to swim in its pristine spring-fed waters. Across the mighty
Jardine River and onto the Pajinka Wilderness Lodge, on the tropical shores
of Torres Strait.
Day 5 Cruise to Thursday Island to go fishing (both optional) or simply
relax by the pool or at tropical Frangipani Beach with a good book.
Day 6 This morning an emotional walk to the very top of Australia - Cape
York! All too soon, you'll board your aircraft to fly over the Great Barrier
Reef to Cairns. Safari terminates at Cairns Airport.
