The Tour
Day 1 Visit the Atherton Tableland's unique Curtain Fig Tree, Mt Hypipamee
(The Crater) National Park and Millstream Falls. Lunch in Ravenshoe and then
the Lava Tubes of Undara, the world's largest, to take a tour with a Savannah
Guide. An after dinner campfire before retiring to your antique railway carriage
accommodation.
Day 2 Breakfast in the Australian bush then travel on to Cobbold Gorge,
to cruise on the beautiful secluded waterway surrounded by spectacularly carved,
135 million -year-old, Hampstead sandstone. Now a sunset drive to your overnight
accommodation in Georgetown, gateway to the goldfields of the past.
Day 3 This morning we visit Croydon and Black Bull Railway Siding on
the way to Normanton for lunch. West across the vast Plains of Promise visiting
Burke & Wills camp # 119, the most northerly camp site of the ill-fated
1860 expedition, and Leichhardt Falls. Overnight at the remote community of
Burketown.
Day 4 Today, the fabulous oasis of Lawn Hill Gorge, set amid the semi
arid spinifex clad Constance Range. Towering red cliffs and silent waterlily
dotted waterways, the gorge is a haven for an abundance of wildlife and a birdwatchers
paradise. A swim beneath the cool waterfalls or a canoe paddle (optional) up
the gorge is highly recommended. Overnight at nearby Adel's Grove, using their
permanent tent accommodation.
Day 5 This morning we travel to real roadtrain country via Gregory to
lunch at Burke & Wills Roadhouse. Explore Normanton before heading off to
Karumba for a Gulf of Carpentaria sunset. Overnight in Karumba
Day 6 An opportunity to take a scenic flight (optional) over the Gulf
Coast before returning to Normanton. Here we board the legendary Gulflander
to take an historical ride through the Savannah landscape to lunch in the bush.
Soon we bid you farewell as you join your flight to Cairns, with new memories
and stories to tell of Australia's remarkable Gulf Savannah country.
