The Tour
Your day begins with hotel accommodation pick up from Cairns or the Northern Beaches. You are transferred by luxury air-conditioned coach to Deeral Landing from where the Frankland Islands are a short open water cruise from the mainland. Your day begins and finishes with a gentle cruise along the rainforest lined Mulgrave River. An interesting commentary provides an insight into the river environment and significant local features of the landscape.
Normanby Island, the island we travel to daily, is covered by monsoonal rainforest vegetation and surrounded by fringing coral reefs teeming with permanent and migratory marine life, especially the Green Sea Turtle which nests on the island. With five hours to spend on this tropical island, there's plenty of time to relax and still find time to join our crew of naturalists on highly guided snorkeling tours, coral viewing, rockpool discovery and island exploration tours....not to mention the semi-submersible submarine and glass bottom boat tours, all genuine highlights for first time and return visitors to this very special environment.
Diving is available for both certified and resort divers and transfers for campers going to nearby Russell Island are also arranged. We are limited to carrying a maximum of 100 passengers to the island on any one day, which will ensure visitors will be able to enjoy this untouched and pristine Great Barrier Reef wonderland. The vessel is luxuriously appointed with a split-level design, spacious seating and a faster cruising speed while still retaining the charming river cruise portion of the journey to the islands. A gourmet tropical lunch including prawns is included in your day, as well as morning and afternoon teas served onboard.
The Frankland Island Group are located 45 kilometres south of Cairns and are an untouched North Queensland treasure. Totally uninhabited, covered in lush vegetation and surrounded by rich and diverse reefs, the Frankland Islands are an exceptional forum for reef and rainforest interpretation and general lifestyle activities associated with the Great Barrier Reef. And, above all, it makes for one of the best "days out" in Cairns.
