The Expedition
The Remote Far Northern Expeditions venture to the far northern reefs of the Great Barrier Reef including Great Detached Reef and the reefs surrounding Raine Island. These expeditions are designed for the adventure diver in mind with a chance to discover relatively unexplored areas.
Imagine slipping into the water at dawn or dusk at the nesting site of the world’s largest remaining population of green turtles. Add to this the excitement of chance encounters with turtle predators such as the tiger shark and other mega fauna such as manta rays or whale sharks and your adventure is complete!
The Research
Australia’s spring is the best time to dive the outer walls of the northern reefs, offering a great chance of encounters with mega fauna including Brydes whales, manta rays, whale sharks & tiger sharks.
During these expeditions we’ll have special guest scientists aboard that specialise in areas such as tiger and reef sharks, turtles and marine archaeology.
The Itinerary
Day1: At 1pm you depart Cairns and enjoy a scenic flight to Lockhart River near the top of Australia, arriving at 2.45pm. We then make our way to Portland Roads which is about one hour’s drive north (depending on road conditions).

Day 3: Raine Is & Great Detached
Day 4, 5, 6: Wishbone, Wreck Bay, Mantis Reef, Southern Small Detached Reef
Day 7: After disembarking the Undersea
Explorer at Portland Roads, passengers will transfer to Lockhart River Airport for the flight to Cairns at 3.45pm, arriving at 5.30pm.
Please note that the expeditions incorporate "live entry" or "drop dives" and drift dives where the vessel is not moored. Hence these expeditions are considered to be for the more adventurous diver.
We select our dives to suit the weather and the marine action of the season. Extreme weather conditions may cause cancellation or adjustment to advertised itinerary.
Flight Information:
Departure point is G.A.M. Air Services, (the Old Sky West Terminal) at the General Aviation Airport in Cairns. Undersea Explorer arranges the charter flights and issues the passenger manifest, and no flight tickets are required. Check in is 30 minutes prior to departure time. At Lockhart River Airport, Undersea Explorer crew will transfer passengers to or from the vessel. Please note that a 35 kilos per person luggage restriction applies (Luggage weight is 35kg distributed over 2 bags)
